A Trusted Partnership: Folio Institutional and Bullington Capital Management

In 2009, Bill Bullington, managing partner of Ohio-based Bullington Capital Management, was casting about for a new custodian. He’d heard about Folio Institutional’s technology and was intrigued, but also skeptical. “I was hesitant at first because it sounded too good to be true,” Bullington said.

But once a Folio sales team member walked him through Folio’s capabilities, he was sufficiently persuaded to test the waters. He became a client in 2010.

“We started off small, with me putting my highest-turnover models on the platform. These models had been enormously difficult to manage, so I thought why not. I’ll give it a shot.”

“The bigger custodians are just harder to work with,” he said. “They don’t really have the tools we required to easily and efficiently customize portfolios for our clients. Everything slows way down when you’re working with them, and they didn’t really provide the support we needed.”

Bullington said he quickly came to realize that Folio’s model management tools were the key to helping his firm build scale and function more efficiently. Bullington Capital has grown to manage investments for approximately 180 households, which translates into about 400 individual client accounts. Bullington attributes much of that growth to his ability to efficiently produce more customized strategies for all clients through the Folio platform.

The Right Partner

Bullington said he was attracted to Folio because it is a more nimble custodian, with account management and client servicing built into a powerful investment platform. His firm wasn’t getting that kind of support and brokerage technology from larger custodians, he added. With Folio, he said, it’s all in one package.

“The bigger custodians are just harder to work with,” he said. “They don’t really have the tools we required to easily and efficiently customize portfolios for our clients. Everything slows way down when you’re working with them, and they didn’t really provide the support we needed.”

One of Folio’s stand-out features is what Bullington describes as the superior functionality of its model rebalancing technology. He cites the speed at which the system can execute model changes and then apply those changes to all subscribed client accounts at once as particularly valuable.

“It’s very intuitive,” Bullington said. “When we rebalance, we are looking at making changes that translate into 4,000 to 5,000 transactions stemming from our updated models. Now we can rebalance and apply the changes to client accounts in 15 minutes or less with Folio. It sounds pie in the sky, but it’s not. It’s really amazing.”

Client Support When It Matters

Besides the investment platform, Folio has proved its worth to Bullington Capital in other ways, including client support. Folio’s client relationship managers made sure Bullington Capital had everything they needed when Ohio state securities regulators performed a routine audit of the firm, saving Bullington from the arduous task of sorting through the data to tease out what the regulators needed. “From a compliance standpoint, this is an excellent example of how Folio helped keep our practice running smoothly,” Bullington said.

Folio’s Advisor Dashboard, a practice management “command center,” is another source of value for Bullington Capital. Gary Miller, head trader, uses the Dashboard to keep track of monthly distributions and to measure cash balances in client accounts. Miller can then calculate how much cash he has to generate in each client’s account to ensure there is sufficient money to cover monthly fees.

“I’m on it everyday,” said Miller, referring to the Dashboard. “If you have a question about a client’s account, the Dashboard is the place to go. It really helps me do my job.”

Growing Bullington Capital with Folio

After several years as a Folio client, Bullington said he wished he had known earlier about the power of the Folio platform and the degree to which it can propel a firm toward attaining its strategic goals. “I just regret that I didn’t know about Folio earlier,” Bullington said. “You can grow your business faster with Folio than anything else out there. Folio really does do it all.”
